Star anise is easily the most beautiful spice in the world. And the flavour of the spice is as unique as its shape.
Essential to Chinese cuisine, but also found in many Indian and Vietnamese dishes, star anise offers a dish sweet, floral, and nutty flavours. You can really bring these flavours out when you combine star anise with cinnamon or black pepper.
The flavours are well protected within the pods, but there are many ways to release them. Toast the pods and seeds, cook in oil, or add early to dishes with longer cooking times. Each method offers something new from this unique spice.
Reminder: Star anise is different than anise. While both can offer similar, sweet flavours, star anise is not as potent as anise seed.
