Spring at the Barrie Farmers’ Market isn’t just a tradition—it’s a celebration of the community, and what we are capable of when we work together.
And we are capable of a lot.
Farmers… Artisans… Customers… Performers… Young… Old… The market is a place where we can all come together to show our support, explore our passions, and invest into our community. This is why the Barrie Farmers’ Market has been around since 1846.
It is also where we got our start, sharing our recipes with the community. And the support we’ve experienced from our loyal customers and other vendors alike has been incredible. This is probably why we get so excited for this time of year.
The market kicks into full gear starting the first weekend of May, as it moves outdoors and expands the number of farmers and vendors. This means more selection and variety for shoppers, not to mention a beautiful way to spend your Saturday mornings as you stroll through the various booths.
Curious about what you can expect? We have you covered!
Here are some of the wonderful things you can find at your local farmers’ market.
Fresh Fruits & Vegetables
Potatoes, Carrots & Other Root Vegetables
Potatoes, carrots, and radishes are staples of the market in May. It isn’t too late to use these for a great stew or soup to warm the body and soul. But, with spring here and summer on the way, there are so many incredible fresh and vibrant recipes to explore. Roasted potatoes are an easy side for just about any meal, especially if you’re having a BBQ!
Asparagus
Nothing says spring like fresh asparagus. Lightly steamed or grilled with a touch of oil and salt, it’s a simple delicacy that’s best enjoyed fresh. But don’t miss out – asparagus has a short season, so enjoy it while you can!
Tomatoes & Cucumbers
Tomatoes and cucumbers start to appear from local greenhouses, offering a sneak peek at summer’s harvest. They require little more than a slice and a sprinkle of herbs to shine with any meal. Looking to elevate your sliced tomatoes and cucumbers? Sprinkle some of Zest’s Italian Seasoning Salt.
Fresh Greens
From arugula to spinach, fresh greens are one of the best parts of spring markets. These early crops are the perfect way to add a burst of freshness to any meal.
Pickled Vegetables
Pickled vegetables aren’t always the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about a farmers’ market, but perhaps they should be. Whether you need toppings for burgers or nachos, or your trying to elevate charcuterie boards, homemade pickled vegetables put a uniquely delicious spin on your meal.
Locally Raised Meats & Poultry
Beef
Is there anything quite like the perfect steak? Take your BBQ to the next level with sustainably raised beef, straight from the farmers who raised the cattle. Whether you season with steak spice, or simply a dash of salt and pepper, you’ll be in for a treat.
Pork
From bacon to sausage, pork products at the market are a testament to the expertise of our local butchers. Our personal favourite is sweet & spicy ribs, smoked to perfection.
Chicken & Poultry
Whether you are a BBQ traditionalist or pushing the boundaries of sous vide precision cooking, your options when cooking with chicken and poultry are nearly endless. This could be why local farmers show so much attention to quality and animal welfare – you can literally taste the difference. Our secret to perfectly moist poultry is brining – check out our guide to brining today!
Other Tasty Treats for Any Occasion
Honey & Maple Syrup
These natural sweeteners are not only delicious but also versatile. Drizzle honey on fresh bread or use maple syrup in a glaze for meats. You might just be surprised how many varieties there are. Our favourite is ginger honey – it is an incredible glaze for ribs!
Sweet Treats
The next time your sweet tooth calls, ditch the grocery store snack aisle and head to the farmers’ market. You’ll find everything from cookies to cheesecakes, including an incredible range of treats to accommodate almost any diet.
Artisanal Breads
Don’t leave the market without grabbing a loaf of artisanal bread. These loaves are perfect for pairing with both sweet and savory spreads.
So, before you hop in the car and head to the grocery store for overpriced groceries this weekend, or open the Amazon app to order mass-produced items from halfway around the world, head down to the market. You’ll be supporting your community, sharing people’s passions, and could discover something amazingly unexpected.
You’ll be happy you did.
We’ll see you there!
